Solana Co-Founder Reveals Plans to Improve Network Reliability after 20-Hour Outage
Following a significant outage on February 25, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has announced plans to improve network reliability by focusing on the software release process, forming an adversarial team for testing, and investigating more efficient network restart procedures.
Solana, one of the fastest-growing blockchain ecosystems, experienced a significant outage on February 25 that lasted close to 20 hours. The network outage was the first interruption of service in 2022, with 11 major outages and three minor ones recorded in the past year. The network’s reliability has become a growing concern for users and investors alike, leading Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko to announce plans to improve the network’s reliability.
According to Yakovenko, the February 25 outage was caused by the 1.14 network update, which was intended to bring speed and scale improvements.
Up to the 1.14 release, core engineers were working to fix live problems that were impacting the network’s speed and usability. These issues included invalid gas metering, lack of flow control for transactions, lack of fee markets, spiraling ram, storage and restart overhead.
To address the network’s reliability issues, Solana will focus on improving the software release process for updates. This will involve using external developers and auditors to hunt for bugs and exploits. Additionally, an adversarial team will be formed to “build additional hooks and instrumentation into the validator code” for more thorough testing. The team will also look into simpler, more efficient network restart procedures.
Yakovenko further revealed that Solana has been working on improving network stability over the past 12 months. Initiatives included building a second validator client, better tooling, upgrading the network communication protocol to “QUIC,” and improvements to the RPC infrastructure.
In conclusion, the Solana co-founder’s announcement of plans to improve network reliability is a welcome development for the Solana community. With the network’s fast-growing ecosystem, it is crucial to ensure that it remains stable and reliable. The focus on improving the software release process, forming an adversarial team, and looking into simpler, more efficient network restart procedures will go a long way in addressing the network’s reliability concerns.
